Banaue is a 4th class mnunicipality in the province of Ifugao. It is widely known as the site of the Banaue Rice Terraces. Because of its high altitude, Banaue is often described as “where land merges with the clouds to meet the heavens”, and the rice terraces as “the stairway to the sky”.
Banaue is approximately 8 to 9 hours travel by land from Manila via the San Jose, Nueva Ecija route. Auto Bus has daily trips from Manila at 10 in the evening. One can also reach Banaue from Baguio via the Halsema Road in 8 hours. Getting around Banaue is done through tricycles which serve as the main transportation mode. But there are jeepneys and buses that can take you to nearby towns and provinces, such as Sagada in Mountain Province.
Banaue is a place for nature adventurers and for cultural immersion. Days are for indulging in activities such as strolling, biking, and trekking. Evenings are for campfire chats at a village or warm indoor cosseting at the lodges and inns.
Banaue’s main attraction, the Banaue Rice Terraces, start from the base of the Cordilleras and reach up to several thousands feet high. Its length, if stretched from end to end, could encircle half the globe.
Other attractions that are visited by tourists are Tam-An Village, Banaue Museum, Viewpoint, Hapao Rice Terraces, Poitan Village, Guihob Natural Pool, Batad Rice Terraces Tapiyah Waterfalls, Banga-an Village, and Mayoyao Village. The Trade Center is also a place to visit to buy your souvenirs.
From Banaue, visitors can also visit the town of Sagada in Mt. Province through a 3-hour drive via the mountain trail of the Cordilleras. Sagada is famous for its ancient hanging coffins and burial caves.
